Moderatia în islam I

Un articol bun al lui Sam Harris în Washington Post despre adevărata moderare în islam și cum tăcerea NU este moderare, la fel cum am spus în a doua parte a mesajului către musulmanii moderați/pașnici.

Iată că Sam Harris atrage atenția spre o asemenea poziție a unui imam, pe fondul discuțiilor aprinse pe seama așa numitei „Ground Zero Mosque”.

Despite his past equivocations on this issue, Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf could dispel these fears in a single paragraph:

"Like all decent people, I am horrified by much that goes on in the name of 'Islam,' and I consider it a duty of all moderate Muslims to recognize that many of the doctrines espoused in the Qur'an and hadith present some unique liabilities at this moment in history. Our traditional ideas about martyrdom, jihad, blasphemy, apostasy, and the status of women must be abandoned, as they are proving disastrous in the 21st century.

Imamul Feisal Abdul Rauf chiar are o poziție publică atât de bine conturată încât nu încearcă să scape islamul de critica publică distrăgând atenția către pasajele la fel de violente și reprobabile din biblie sau torah. Ba chiar atrage atenția că asemenea practici barbare nu mai sunt de ceva timp bun baza a ceea ce considerat a fi credința pe care o reflectă majoritatea:

Many of Islam's critics have fully justified concerns about the state of discourse in parts of the Muslim world--where it is a tissue of conspiracy theories, genocidal ravings regarding the Jews, and the most abject, triumphalist fantasies about conquering the world for the glory of Allah. While the scriptures of Judaism and Christianity also contain terrible passages, it has been many centuries since they truly informed the mainstream faith. Hence, we do not tend to see vast numbers of Jews and Christians calling for the murder of apostates today.

These are the sorts of sentiments that should be the litmus test for Muslim moderation. Find an imam who will speak this way, and gather followers who think this way, and I'll volunteer to cut the ribbon on his mosque in lower Manhattan.

Să sperăm că nu vor plana suspiciuni justificate de taqiyya asupra acestui imam și, într-adevăr să fie parte din curentul de musulmani moderați și reformiști (vezi clipul) pe care-l așteptăm de ceva timp și care a avut doar câțiva expozanți.

Mesaj către musulmanii pașnici - II

Dacă musulmanii pașnici și moderați ar lua poziție împotriva extremiștilor, ar fi mai bine pentru toți. Evenimentul „Everybody Draw Muhammad Day” (articole aici și aici) a fost o reacție la amenințările extremiștilor care cred că prin amenințări pot face lumea civilizată să renunțe la dreptul la liberă exprimare, deci și la posibilitatea a critica orice doctrină totalitară cum este islamul.

Reacția musulmanilor moderați este, în general, de a spune non-musulmanilor că teroriștii se înșeală și că greșesc, că au interpretat greșit Coranul și tradițiile. Această atitudine nu ajută deloc și nu oprește extremiștii jihadiști, ba din contră.

You need to understand the effect of your defense on the non-Muslim mind. If you want to end Islamic terrorism, and if you understood what effect you had, you would stop defending your faith to infidels.

Because even if we all believed you, so what? Even if you successfully convinced us Islam is really a religion of peace, what difference would it make? Does it help us defeat Jihadis? No, not at all. We have terrorists quoting the Koran (urging Muslims to kill infidels) and we have other Muslims saying the Koran is only about peace. Where does that leave us? You've replaced clarity with confusion. You've replaced resolve with hesitation. And to that degree, you've given Jihadis the upper hand.

Peaceful Muslims, I ask you to hear this: You make non-Muslims less able to defend themselves by going on these websites and justifying your religion to them.

Totuși, ce ar trebui să faceți voi, musulmanii moderați?

The first thing you can do is make it clear to us infidels that you are a believer in a new, modified form of Islam. You can tell us yes, there are many passages in the Koran that encourage violence against infidels but you think these passages should be ignored by modern Muslims. That would really help clarify things for non-Muslims. Be out front about it.

You can also openly criticize Jihadis for not moderating or modernizing the teachings of Mohammad. This would help all the non-Muslims understand what is happening and who we should consider enemies and friends. It would help non-Muslims understand the "civil war" going on within Islam itself.

You should quote the violent passages and say you think all Muslims should ignore those passages.

I know it takes courage to openly criticize either the Jihadis or the Koran. You're putting your own life at risk, no matter where you live (because the penalty for criticizing the religion of peace is death). It is much easier to defend your beliefs by justifying your religion to infidels. But that doesn't solve the problem. It makes things worse.

If you are committed to defeating Islamic terrorism while at the same time justifying your version of Islam, you can expend your energy convincing young Muslim men to follow your way rather than the Jihadis' way. Right now, Jihadis are successfully persuading young men to follow the strict Islamic (violent) path.

Pe scurt:

• criticați direct și deschis pasajele violente din Coran și precizați clar că nu sunteți de acord cu ele
• criticați deschis și clar extremiștii
• încercați să atrageți cât mai mulți tineri să gândească în termeni deschiși, nu fundamentaliști, cu privire la islam
• nu mai spuneți că teroriștii nu au justificare în Coran și Hadith, acest lucru e fals și nu permite non-musulmanilor sa cunoască adevărul
• vorbiți și cu alți musulmani deschis despre aceste lucruri și încurajați-i să procedeze conform cu aceste principii
